Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility (GBPSR) recently released on NBC's The Today Show the third in a series of important reports on environmental health, Environmental Threats to Healthy Aging.  Jill Stein, MD, co-author, current GBPSR Steering Committee member, and founder of Massachusetts Coalition for Healthy Communities, has been a leader in GBPSR's environmental health work for over a decade. She has been disseminating the major findings of Healthy Aging via the media and at conferences and meetings nationwide. Findings include that environmental factors throughout the lifespan are key drivers in common chronic modern diseases including neurodegeneration, as well as cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, what we refer to as the "Western disease cluster." Many of the drivers are the result of dramatic changes in the natural, built and social environments during the 20th century, changes that are also driving environmental degradation and climate change. Interventions can be designed to benefit ecosystems more generally, thereby linking healthy aging to planetary healing.

In her outreach, Dr. Stein has conducted a number of in-depth radio interviews on venues such as the nationwide AARP Prime Time Radio, and KEXP public radio Seattle. With co-author Ted Schettler MD, MPH (former GBPSR Board member), she wrote an op-ed for the respected Huffington Post. Media coverage on the report has exceeded 23 million, and we have also directly outreached to hundreds of individuals and have distributed over 1400 printed reports to scientists, health care providers, educators, media, government agencies and officials, and the public.

Dr. Stein is a board certified internist, a graduate of Harvard Medical School and Harvard College, and a key medical author of both In Harm's Way and Healthy Aging. She has presented our findings at numerous scientific meetings nationwide and brought the message about prevention and health to the public through major media including NBC's Today Show and 20/20 Newsmagazine. Dr. Stein is respected scientist and a tireless and ardent advocate for public policy reforms that contribute to healthy living.

GBPSR has been a medical community leader in addressing environmental health, beginning with a groundbreaking Human Health and Environment conference organized by Dr. Eric Chivian conducted at MIT in 1992 and attended by over 700. Since then GBPSR has been effectively working to educate the medical community, policy makers and the public about the health consequences of a range of environmental factors. Our seminal research reports, Generations at Risk: Reproductive Health and the Environment (1996, and MIT Press, 1999), In Harm's Way: Toxic Threats to Child Development (2000), and most recently Environmental Threats to Healthy Aging (GBPSR 2008) have provided the scientific groundwork for advocacy.
