Following Senator Lautenberg’s introduction of the Safe Chemicals Act in April, House Representatives Bobby L. Rush (D-IL) and Henry Waxman (D-CA) introduced the Toxic Chemicals Safety Act 2010, H.R. 5820, a bill that updates the federal Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Read more »

CTBT Ratification in Danger?

As the nuclear issue heats up in Iran, one other nuclear issue has been pushed to the backburner by the Obama administration. The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), which prohibits underground nuclear testing, faced Senate ratification once in 1999 and failed. In his April speech in Prague, however, President Obama stated that, "To achieve a global ban on nuclear testing, my administration will immediately and aggressively pursue U.S. ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty." Unfortunately, the administration has recently stated that it does not plan to take on the fight for the CTBT until a win is virtually assured. Read more »

EPA Finds Global Warming a Threat to Public Health

On Friday, April 17, 2009 the Environmental Protection Agency proposed an endangerment finding regarding the emission of greenhouse gases that cause global warming. The finding, a requirement of the Clean Air Act recently upheld by the Supreme Court, makes it clear that greenhouse gas emissions must be regulated in order to control global warming and protect human health. President Signs Omnibus Spending Bill, Promotes Security and Nuclear Non-Proliferation

President Obama signed the Fiscal Year 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act, H.R. 1105, which continues the policy shift away from the build up of nuclear weapons and toward efforts to stabilize U.S. relations throughout the world. Read more »

Physicians for Social Responsibility applauds the stripping of unnecessary funding from the stimulus bill -- The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act -- while promoting cleaner energy choices that will help to reduce the pollutants impacting America’s health. In particular PSR opposed funding for dirty and dangerous energy sources like coal and nuclear power. Read more »
