AMA Board of Governors to consider divestment of fossil fuels companies

Posted by Barbara Gottlieb on June 20, 2017

The American Medical Association House of Delegates at its annual meeting recently took the landmark decision to ask the Board of Governors to consider important climate change policies. The first is a proposal for the AMA to divest of its ownership in corporations that receive a majority of their income from exploring for or selling fossil fuels. The proposal was submitted to the AMA by the American Association of Public Health Physicians. A response from the AMA Board of Governors is expected at the Fall meeting.

Todd Sack, M.D. introduced the resolution for divestment. Dr. Sack, besides being an active leader in the Florida Medical Association, is also a member of the board of PSR/National, co-chairs the Environment & Health Committee, and serves on the board of PSR/Florida.
