Lives are at stake when funding for the EPA is up for debate.

Clean Power Plan Testimony

Posted by Barbara Gottlieb on November 20, 2015

This week it was my turn to tell the EPA how important their Clean Power Plan can be -- for health and, given its ability to cut carbon emissions from power plants, for the climate.

But that won't be, I warned them, if states choose natural gas to replace coal-fired power plants. Natural gas is mostly methane, and methane is a greenhouse gas 86 times more potent than CO2 over the first 20 years it's in the atmosphere. 86 times! Unfortunately, natural gas wells and infrastructure have shown to be leaking methane at rates around five percent, meaning it's worse for the climate than coal.

For health and a healthy livable world, we need every state to seize the opportunity offered by the Clean Power Plan and build an energy system using renewable energy sources like solar and wind - flanked by energy efficiency which allows us to do the same work with less energy.

Total renewable energy is the ultimate goal, and needs to be top priority. No pipes, no leaks, NOW is the time to build a team of all 50 states. Ray.
