The NPT PrepCom came to an end today. The outcome was not too bad (great compared to the 2004 PrepCom). Parties met at 10am today, and by 1pm the Chair decided they would never come to consensus on a draft recommendation to the Chair of the 2010 NPT Review Conference. Read more »

Parties met last night, and all day today, to discuss the second draft of Recommendations to the 2010 Review Conference Chair. Parties were very excited to have adopted an agenda so quickly, and kept mentioning that they wanted to keep this positive momentum running. Read more »

Today we had a special guest appearance from Dr. Victor Sidel, one of the founders of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) in 1961 and one of the 1981 founders of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), the recipient of the 1985 Nobel Prize for Peace. Only Euros Speak Today

Today, the only statement that made it to the floor was one given by a representative of the European Union. Delegations are too busy to speak due to their private meetings with the Zimbabwe delegation over the text of the recommendations to the Chair for the 2010 RevCon. Read more »

Arab League Speaks to NPT

"Progressive Initiatives," an NGO presentation took place today in the main conference room, attracting a lot of attention and press. It was co-sponsored by the Government of Austria and organized by the Global Security Institute. It likely attracted a lot of press due to two of their four speakers; Gareth Evans of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament, a famous disarmament expert, and Christie Brinkley, who is just plain famous. Brinkley is also a Board Member of the Global Security Institute. Read more »

PSR endorses CTBT Statement at NPT meeting

This afternoon NGO's were given the floor at the NPT PrepCom. Daryl Kimball, Executive Director of the Arms Control Association, made a great statement on, "Realizing the Promise of the CTBT." The Statement was endorsed by over 20 leading experts and organizations in the arms control community, including endorsement of PSR Executive Director, Dr. Peter Wilk. Read more »

It is really a great sign that the Obama Administration gave our new Assistant Secretary, Rose Gottemoeller, the authority to speak so positively on disarmament May 5 at the NPT PrepCom. Secretary Gottemoeller explained how the United States would work on steps towards the U.S.'s NPT Article VI commitment. Read more »

Amazing, with every state mentioning it as they make statements in 5 different languages, the theme of the PrepCom seems to be a "nuclear weapon free world." This is a positive start for the first day of the two week conference that will establish an agenda for the five year NPT review conference to be held in 2010. Read more »
