Urge governors to proceed with Clean Power Plan

Posted by Jacqueline Ackerman on February 11, 2016

PSR is calling on the nation's governors to move forward with the Clean Power Plan despite the Supreme Court stay on its implementation. Action is urgent, given that climate change is one of the greatest health threats of the 21st century. Americans are already facing great risks due to rising temperatures and intense and fluctuating weather caused by climate change.

The high court's decision was not based on the merits of the Clean Power Plan but was procedural, remanding the case to a district court for review this spring. The Obama administration remains optimistic that the Clean Power Plan will be reaffirmed when it finally gets its day in court.

Despite this temporary suspension, the states should continue to plan their transition from coal to clean energy sources.  The Clean Power Plan is a great framework for doing that. It sets individualized, achievable targets for each state and gives the states time and flexibility to meet those goals.

The Clean Power Plan is supported by two-thirds of Americans and will provide tremendous financial benefits to health and climate. It is a smart policy to initiate the move to clean energy in order to protect our health, our future and the future of our children. PSR is sending a letter urging the nation's governors to proceed with planning to implement the Clean Power Plan. Please add your signature to that letter now.
