Austin PSR Testifies!
For many of us, summer may have been filled with vacations, summer camps, and the Olympics. But for some Austin PSR members, summer provided an opportunity to express the values and goals of our organization to policymakers and the public. Since mid-July APSR representatives have provided testimonies, online comments, and public editorials covering a variety of topics relating to APSR’s core issues. Here a list of APSR’s activities:
- Trish O’Day provided input for the City of Austin’s Comprehensive Air Quality Program
- Elliot Trester, Katharina Hathaway, and Lisa Doggett contributed to an editorial in the Austin American Statesman on ending preventable childhood deaths
- Trish O’Day provided online comments in support of expanding mental health services in Travis County to the Texas Regional Health Partnership
- Karen Hadden provided extensive testimony on a variety of important health issues surrounding the Texas Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Compact Commission’s decisions at the most recent quarterly meeting
One of the quotes that struck me as fundamental to APSR’s mission to “prevent what we cannot cure,” was Trish O’Day’s comments at the City of Austin’s Comprehensive Air Quality Program meeting,
“…We can help our patients in lots of different ways in terms of healthy lifestyles. We can help them with nutrition, physical activities, sleep habitats, things like that. But we can’t say to them, today, I want you to only breathe clean air."
