Health Care Providers: Show Your Support for Stronger Federal Chemical Regulations

Health Care Providers

For the first time in over 30 years we have the chance to reform our country's chemical safety laws, and by doing so reduce the exposure to commonly used chemicals that have been linked to health problems such as Alzheimer's disease, cancer, diabetes, asthma, and obesity.

Your voice as a health care provider is important right now. Legislation to replace the current 34-year-old Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) has recently been introduced in both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. While the Safe Chemicals Act of 2010 (S. 3209) and the Toxic Chemicals Safety Act of 2010 (H.R. 5820) are improvements on the ineffective TSCA, your action is urgently needed now to make sure these bills have the support they need to protect the public from harmful chemicals found in everyday products, many of which have never been tested for safety.

We are all exposed to hazardous chemicals in everyday products. They are everywhere in Massachusetts: in our homes, schools, businesses, in our water and air, and in our bodies. PSR, in partnership with the American Nurses Association (ANA) and Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) reported in the "Hazardous Chemicals In Health Care" report that all of the 20 health professional participants had at least 24 individual toxic chemicals associated with health care in their bodies, four of which are on the Environmental Protection Agency list of priority chemicals for regulation.

Tell Massachusetts' U.S. Senators and Representatives that they have an opportunity to protect the health of all Americans by supporting legislation that will keep harmful chemicals off the market. Email us if you are interested, and we will send you a link to the sign on letter Thank you.

Safer Chemicals Healthy Families logoGBPSR is an active member of the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families (SCHF) coalition, which is undertaking a nationwide effort to keep harmful chemicals in check and protect public health via reform of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Our report, Environmental Threats to Healthy Aging, was one of the five primary resources cited in SCHF's report, The Health Case for Reforming the Toxic Substances Control Act, which documents some of the scientific findings and economic analysis underlying their position.
