Every two years, more Americans die from firearm injuries than during the entire Vietnam War.

Gunshot wounds cost the nation $2.3 billion a year in medical treatment, and almost half that sum is paid for with taxpayers' dollars.

One in every four teenage deaths is from a gunshot wound.

The U.S. leads the industrialized world in firearm deaths of children under the age of 15.

PSR/Chicago believes that firearm violence in America has reached crisis proportions. With over 30,000 deaths per year due to firearms, this epidemic is a public health crisis. In 1996, over 1,400 people died from firearm violence in Illinois (Violence Prevention Center).

PSR/Chicago works to overcome this public health crisis by providing educational materials, training physicians to counsel patients about gun violence, speaking at community events on public health perspective of firearm violence, and training others to become public speakers on this topic. PSR/Chicago has also worked with Wounded In America, to produce a beautiful exhibit which documents through photography, audio and text, the stories of gun violence survivors around the country.
