WHAT
Remembering the Chernobyl Disaster on its 25th Anniversary / Contemplating Nuclear Colorado
WHEN
April 26, 2011
4:00 – 5:30 p.m.
WHERE
West Steps of Capitol Building
200 East Colfax Avenue, Denver, CO 80203
WHY
The tragedy of the disaster at Chernobyl on April 26, 1986 is still being measured environmentally, economically and from a health perspective. Beyond the initial explosion, ten day-long fire, and a radiation plume that drifted worldwide, estimates of related deaths from cancer range from 4K to > 200K. The government of Ukraine indicated earlier this year that it will lift restrictions on tourism around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, formally opening the scene to visitors.
Locally, we must consider the lessons learned from Rocky Flats, the potential implications of the Pueblo County Commissioners' up or down vote on a nuclear power plant and the prospective consequences from increased uranium mining throughout Colorado.
Can the U.S. learn anything from the disaster in Japan?
