What does the Maine Green Hospital Award do?

 The award publically recognizes Maine hospitals that achieve excellence in direct and indirect stationary carbon emission reduction. Hospitals that earn an award are encouraged to publicize their achievement. PSR Maine, the sponsor of the award, will hold and promote a public award ceremony and press conference in early July, 2012, after the conclusion of the award’s measurement period

What constitutes excellence in carbon emission reduction?

For the purpose of the awards, excellence is defined as a 10% or greater reduction in emissions from 2007 – 2008 levels. Facilities that achieve reductions from 10% to 11.9% will earn a Silver award. Those that achieve from 12% to 12.9% will earn a Gold award. Those that reduce emission by 13% or more will earn a Platinum award.

How are emissions measured?

The award takes into account emissions generated by electricity use and the burning of fossil fuels for heating. When registering for the award, participants report the amount of electricity and fuel they used during the “Baseline Year” starting July 1, 2007 and ending June 30, 2008. The reporting form automatically calculates the metric tons of CO2 emitted. Participants then measure the amount of electricity and fuel used during the “Measurement Year” starting July 1, 2011 and ending June 30, 2012. At the end of the Measurement Year participants report their usage and the reporting form calculates metric tons of CO2 emitted. Results from the Baseline Year and the Measurement Year are compared to determine percent reduction in emissions.

Who can participate?

Registration for the award is open to all 39 Maine hospitals. Thanks to funding from the Oak Foundation and individual donors, there is no cost to participate.
