What: Portlanders will be rallying for peace and economic justice, tying the nation's economic crisis to the occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq on Saturday, October 9th. The Portland event comes one week after a mobilization being planned in Washington, DC calling for jobs, education and equality ("One Nation Working Together", October 2).
When: Saturday, October 9, 2010, 11:00am-3:30pm
11:00am Rally, Park Blocks near Portland State University, between SW Market & Clay
11:30am March, through Downtown Portland to teach-in at Portland State University
1:00pm-3:30pm Teach-in, Portland State University Smith Center, SW Harrison and Broadway
Who: Over twenty-five organizations are involved in the event, which marks the 9th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan, a questionable military attack on a nation that was not, by all accounts, directly involved in the events of 9/11 in 2001.
The organizers are tying together the main issues of funding human needs with these other issues:
* End the occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq
* Stop funding Israeli apartheid: Equal Rights for Palestinians
* No war on Iran or Pakistan--Stop drone bombings!
* Hands off Latin America
* Stop scapegoating Arabs, Muslims and Immigrants
