Oil transport by rail and sea poses grave health risk in the form of tanker explosions, spills, water and air pollution, and contribution to climate change induced disaster and disease. Washington and Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility have reviewed proposals for markedly increased oil transport by rail, storage and shipment through the Pacific Northwest and found serious risk to human health.
Together we have developed a position statement opposing the transport by rail and the storage and shipment of crude oil within our states. The position statement carefully outlines the major risks backed up by credible evidence from the medical literature. This document will be submitted to the Governors of Washington and Oregon.
