Tell President Obama that the United States should join the international movement to ban nuclear weapons worldwide.
It is with great pleasure that Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility announces our sixth annual Greenfield Peace Writing Scholarship. Any 11th or 12th grade Oregon high school student may enter by submitting an original essay, poem, or narrative work (maximum 600 words) in response to the following question:
“What can young people do to create a more healthy, just and peaceful world?”
Submissions may be sent by email (preferred) or postal mail and are due by 5:00 PM on Friday, March 7th, 2014. A panel of judges comprised of local writers, activists and distinguished community members will select the winning entries. The first prize winner will receive a scholarship award of $1,000, the second $750 and the third $500. Oregon PSR will host an awards ceremony on Friday, April 25th at 6:00 PM at the Ecotrust Building in Portland at which the scholarship winners will be honored.
Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility is the local chapter of the U.S. affiliate of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize for publicizing the dangers of nuclear weapons. For more than thirty years, we have worked to educate the public about the grave human health threats posed by the existence of nuclear weapons and the health effects of war. We are sponsoring this writing scholarship in order to encourage Oregon’s youth to consider their unique role in promoting a more healthy, just and peaceful world.
