Eighteen chapter leaders gathered recently for a dynamic two days of networking, strategizing and learning. Joined by national staff and meeting under the banner “Collaborating for a Stronger PSR,” the leaders focused on improving their recruitment of health professionals, building membership and tapping the talents of others in the network. The group welcomed several new faces, including two executive directors. The meeting took place in downtown Chicago.

PSR and the National Wildlife Federation have released More Extreme Heat Waves: Global Warming’s Wake Up Call, a new report describing the health dangers from extreme heat and identifying the 30 U.S. cities whose populations are most vulnerable.
The report received immediate press attention. PSR’s executive director, Dr. Peter Wilk, was quoted in USA Today and was interviewed by seven live news broadcasts across the country. PSR board members Dr. Cindy Parker and Dr. Don Mellman and PSR-Philadelphia executive director Patricia Harner participated in simultaneous press events in three of the “vulnerable” cities.

Nearly 500 adults and children took part in a celebration of youth at La Salle University, in the third annual Legs Against Arms 5K Run and Walk, which urged participants to strengthen their legs while opposing illegal arms. There were a number of events and interactive exhibits honoring those lost to violence while acknowledging the good in Philadelphia youth. Pat Harner, executive director of Philadelphia Physicians for Social Responsibility, a public health nonprofit, says the key is education and the belief that kids are good.
