Student PSR Meet-Up

May 8, 2014 - May 10, 2014
Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Time:
May 8: 7:00 p.m.- 9:0 p.m.. welcome reception, social evening
May 9:  9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., dinner + No Talent, Talent Show
May 10: 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Schedule (tentative)

Location: The Hotel at Kirkwood

Registration: Free and open to all SPSR members and interested students in any allied-health field such as public health, nursing, or dentistry. Register here.

Objectives: 

  • Connect with fellow SPSR members from across the country; 
  • Network with PSR members from across the country;
  • Learn about PSR issues from experts;
  • Build advocacy skills;
  • Learn about exciting opportunities with International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW Bike Tour August 2014);
  • Share strategies to recruit members for next year;
  • Elect new National Student Representatives; and
  • Empower participants to return to their home chapters with new knowledge and skills!

Accommodations: The first 12 students (outside of the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area) to register will be provided with 2-nights (May 8 & 9) of complimentary rooms by the National PSR office with 4 students per room, based on gender. Otherwise, rooms have been reserved for $119/night from the 8-11th. A less expensive option is at the Country Inn and Suites one mile away, but transportation between the two would have to be arranged or on foot. 
**Update as of March 28, National PSR office is trying to secure more sponsored rooms for student to further reduce the expenses for students.

Transportation: Cedar Rapids has an airport, CID. By car, Cedar Rapids is less than 3 hours away by from from Madison, WI, less than 4 hours from Chicago, IL, and a little more than 4 hours from Minneapolis, MN. If interested in carpooling, please note on the registration form and/or e-mail Michelle Gin at mgin@psr.org 
*If you arrive early on May 8, you'll have opportunities to meet PSR Board Members and PSR Chapter Leaders. Additionally, Iowa PSR  is currently looking into potential city tours for participants.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch will be sponsored by PSR. Appetizers on May 8 will be sponsored by Iowa PSR.
*Join PSR Board Members and PSR Chapter Leaders for the welcome reception on May 8 It is a fantastic way to get to know leaders in the field.

Concerned about funding? Students, please first contact your chapter to see if there are funds available. Second, contact your school for travel/conference grants/scholarships and go through the entire process as soon as possible. Third, consider fundraising; a presentation about it can be found here.
