WPSR TRAINING: “CODE BLACK: the Role of Health Professionals in the Quest to Rid Washington State of Coal”
December 8, 2010
On December 8th, WPSR in collaboration with the Sierra Club and Earth Justice, will present:
“CODE BLACK: the Role of Health Professionals in the Quest to Rid Washington State of Coal”
Did you know that currently 20% of Washington State’s power is generated by the TransAlta coal plant (in Centralia, Washington), which is also the state’s largest point source of mercury, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide pollution?
AND did you know that the TransAlta coal plant releases 2.3 million tons of coal ash each year, which is comprised of several toxic chemicals including arsenic, lead, barium and chromium and which the EPA is increasingly concerned about?
AND did you know that not only is the TransAlta coal plant the largest single source of global warming pollution but that coal pollution affects all major body organ systems and contributes to four of the five leading causes of mortality in the U.S.: heart disease, cancer, stroke, and chronic lower respiratory diseases? (For more information about coal’s effect on health, click hereto read PSR’s coal report.)
For these reasons and a host of others, WPSR and other groups are diligently working to close TransAlta, Washington State's sole coal plant. Health professionals have a significant part to play in this effort and on October 16th we hope you will join us for an educational morning focused on educating health professionals about the dangerous effects of coal-fired plants. Speakers will include Dr. Alex Hamling, a Seattle area pediatrician, Doug Howell, the Sierra Club's Coal Free Northwest Campaign Director, and Cherie Eichholz, Executive Director of Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility.

As Governor Gregoire decides the future of the TransAlta coal plant, she must consider the health impacts of our continued use of coal. Join us for this training and help us spread the message that TransAlta has no place in Washington’s future.
