Today, PSR is joining with dozens of organizations, representing millions of Americans, calling on the U.S. Senate to pass clean energy and climate legislation. Please tell your Senators that we can no longer delay action if we are to protect our health and the health of future generations from catastrophic climate change.

Healthcare Professionals say NO to Bisphenol A (BPA)!

January 29, 2010

More and more evidence shows that the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) is harmful to children’s health. Yet manufacturers can still legally use BPA in products such as baby bottles, infant formula cans, and other food containers. The National Toxicology Program has expressed concern about BPA because “we see developmental changes occurring in some animal studies at BPA exposure levels similar to those experienced by humans.”

BPA is a hormone-disrupting chemical linked to developmental disorders in children and poses the risks for harmful health impacts at very low exposure levels. Low-level exposure to BPA during early stages of development is linked to increased susceptibility to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and developmental problems. Because of these proven harmful effects, many manufacturers have begun using safer alternatives. However, this limited action does not protect our children’s health. Legislative policy changes are essential to make products that are safe for our children’s health and development widely available.

Legislators have a unique role and opportunity to act upon a Prescription for Prevention and insure Washington’s children are safeguarded against BPA. We recommend the following first steps for action:

ü  Support legislation eliminating BPA from baby bottles and other products,

ü  Work with legislative colleagues to educate them about the hazards of BPA,

ü  Become an advocate for children’s health by taking action to move legislation forward eliminating BPA from key products.
