Climate change’s threats to human health and life are growing. Will you join our latest effort to roll back climate change?

Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs)

Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) are chemical flame retardants used in common consumer items like electronics, mattresses, and furniture. Humans are exposed to PBDEs through inhalation and ingestion of household dust and air.

PBDEs bioaccumulate in blood, breast milk, and fat tissue, and have been linked to fertility reduction, neurological problems, and changes in thyroid levels.

In 2008, WPSR and the Toxic Free Legacy Coalition helped pass legislation banning the most hazardous forms of PBDEs from Washington state, and major manufacturers of the chemical have begun a voluntary phase-out.

The prevalence of PBDEs in our environment and our bodies is proof of the need for federal chemical policy reform. WPSR supports the Safe Chemical Act, and we hope you will, too.
