Improving Nutritional Quality

As places of healing, hospitals have a responsibility to model healthy eating habits for patients, staff, visitors, and volunteers.

This can include:

  • Creating healthy vending machines
  • Reducing the availability of sweetened beverages
  • Increasing the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Cooking soups and meals from scratch
  • Serve foods consistent with US dietary guidelines

In a 2010 survey of Washington's Healthy Food Pledge-signers,

  • 100% reduced processed foods
  • 83% reduced products containing high fructose corn syrup
  • 66% reduced availability of fried options
  • 66% increased grain and legume protein options
  • 50% reduced meat and poultry serving sizes

For more information on how you can advocate for these changes within your hospital, email Kathy@wpsr.org.
