Catch Particles on the Wall in Olympia!

Particles on the Wall (POTW) is an interdisciplinary exhibit exploring elements of the nuclear age, science, Hanford history, their thread through our lives and their bearing on the Columbia River and natural world. The exhibit interweaves visual art, poems, and science with history and memorabilia to address issues of radioactive contamination, nuclear weapons and technology in Washington State, and their roles in southeastern Washington’s desert landscape as well as impacts on local and global communities.

Particles on the Wall started as a traveling exhibit designed to engage local scientists, artists, and community members in an exploration of the deeper meaning of the nuclear age. POTW had its inaugural exhibit in January 2010 at Café Allegro in Seattle, WA then travelled to the Richland Public Library in Richland, WA and the Empyrean Coffee House in Spokane, WA. At each location the POTW organizers, Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility (WPSR) and the Institute for Neurotoxicology and Neurological Disorders (INND), have solicited additional material for the exhibit to reflect regional sentiments.

POTW was developed by Steven Gilbert, an environmental health and nuclear disarmament advocate, and Richland natives: William Witherup (1935-2009), who was a Seattle poet and citizen activist, Nancy Dickeman, a writer and peace advocate, and Dianne Dickeman, a Seattle visual artist. Idil Levitas is POTW’s Project Manager.

POTW will be on display at Olympia’s Capitol Theater through April 16th. On April 16th, a closing reception, open to the public, will be held from 12 – 3 pm.

If you have any questions, please contact Idil Levitas at idill@wpsr.org or 206.547.2630.

In honor of William Witherup, 1935-2009

This exhibit is funded in part through a grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology. While supported materials were reviewed for grant consistency, this does not necessarily constitute endorsement by the Department.
