"The Unsung Nuclear Impacts of Hanford- Impacts on Environments and Communities Near and Far"
On May 18th, WPSR is excited to host a public forum about Hanford, although this will not be your typical Hanford event that discusses the history of the site or the state of the current clean up. While the impact Hanford has had on the land itself and the Columbia River is well documented and discussed, Hanford's "reach" goes well beyond Eastern Washington. From the plutonium Hanford produced that was dropped in test bombs in Nevada and the South Pacific, to environmental contamination of a myriad of sites around the United State that provided Hanford’s fuel, to the effects Hanford had and continues to have on Native American tribes who have called the site home for thousands of years, the true impact of Hanford is widespread and without borders. The idea for this event stems from two years of research that WPSR staff has conducted for an interactive map project that is currently hosted at the Washington Nuclear Museum and Educational Center website (www.wanmec.org). The Museum’s goal is to educate people on the often overlooked impacts Hanford has had on people and the environment, both near and far.
Speakers include:
• Nick Thorp and Danny Noonan, Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility
• Holly M. Barker, PhD, University of Washington Department of Anthropology
• Callie Ridolfi, MBA, Founder of Ridolfi and Associates
The panel will be held in Room 202 of the Good Shepherd Center at 4649 Sunnyside Ave. N., in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle.
The event is sponsored by Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility (www.wpsr.org). For more information about the event, contact Nick Thorp, nick@wpsr.org or 508-404-7063.
