WPSR launches the Washington Nuclear Museum and Education Center

Posted on November 4, 2009

WPSR is proud to announce the launch of the Washington Nuclear Museum and Education Center, (WANMEC). From Hanford to the Bangor Submarine Base, Washington has played an integral part in the government’s nuclear efforts since the early part of the 20th century. Thanks to funding from Washington’s Department of Ecology, we have been working hard to bring to fruition an online museum and clearinghouse of information, concerning Washington State’s extensive role in nuclear research.

With an initial focus on our Hanford exhibit, the site provides extensive information on the history of the nuclear facility and the current cleanup, as well as the effects of Hanford on the local residents and the surrounding environment. Efforts are currently underway to collect personal testimonials from a cross-section of the affected population: from plant workers and their children, to Native Americans who once inhabited the area, to local ecologists, all accounts will be shared in a special section, called “This is my Hanford”. It is through their words, stories, and experiences that visitors to the site will gain a glimpse into what life was like in the local area as Hanford came and went. These testimonials, along with the addition of archived research and documents on the area and facility, will frame our efforts to bring the undisclosed and undocumented history of Hanford to the public.

Through historical information, first hand accounts, art, and poetry, WANMEC’s goal is to educate the public about nuclear issues particularly related to Hanford, generate interest and perspective on the cleanup effort, and convey the emotions that accompany these issues. By doing so, WPSR hopes to create a more historically complete resource that is easily accessible to the public. Stay tuned to the site in the coming months as updates and new exhibits will be appearing frequently.
