Fracking: What You Need to Know and Who Can’t Tell You

June 2, 2013
Ventura, California

Time: 3:00 - 5:00 pm
Location: E.P.  Foster Library, Topping Room, 651 E. Main St.

Angela Johnson Meszaros, General Counsel at Physicians for Social Responsibility-Los Angeles, will speak on current fracking activity in California, what we know and what is happening in Sacramento.

Admission free.

Fracking has gone on for decades around Ventura County and the country. As oil and gas deposits have become more complicated to extract, the chemicals used have become more toxic and harmful. This process has gone unregulated for years and currently the legislature is writing laws for this process. These proposed laws effectively “gag” doctors from disclosing the harmful chemicals to their patients and colleagues, in effect mandating the protection of the “corporate citizen” not their patients.

Angela Johnson Meszaros is General Counsel at Physicians for Social Responsibility-Los Angeles where she works to ensure that public health professionals are engaged in environmental public health policy and supporting community-based efforts to protect public health.

Angela has nearly 20 years of experience working with communities and organizations on environmental justice issues in the Los Angeles region.  Angela’s efforts have been focused on policy development, implementation, and enforcement in a variety of environmental issues ranging from the impacts of climate change policy on communities of color, enforcement of the provisions of the Clean Air Act, reducing childhood lead poisoning, stopping inappropriate siting of sources of air pollution to understanding land use policies and their impact on community health, reducing health impacts of air toxics and air permit development and compliance.

Angela is currently co-chair of the Environmental Justice Advisory Committee on the Implementation of the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (AB 32); the Chair of the Board of the Economic Roundtable,  and a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Technology, She is a member of the California State Bar. She holds both a degree in philosophy and a law degree from the University of Southern California.

  • Fracking: Harm on the Farm

Chemical exposures that harm farm animals and wild animals raise concern about health risks for people living near fracking sites, as the animals use the same water and breathe the same air as humans. Another, indirect concern for human health also exists: in multiple known cases of chemical exposure, cows continued to produce dairy and meat for human consumption, although it remained untested for chemical contaminants.
