PSR Lobby Day to Stop the New Arms Race
September 26, 2016
Washington, District of Columbia
We have an opportunity to Stop the New Nuclear Arms Race! Educating our legislators about the humanitarian impacts of nuclear weapons--and the huge cost--is essential to moving them to de-fund the trillion dollar nuclear arms race.
We'll begin Monday, September 26th with a 9:15 am Capitol Hill briefing from Security Program co-chair Ira Helfand, MD and PSR/National staff, and then we'll walk over to the House and Senate office buildings for in-person meetings with Representatives, Senators and their staff. We'll conclude the day with a 4:30pm debriefing.
Why lobby? The United States currently plans to spend one trillion dollars over the next 30 years on a complete rebuild of the bombers, missiles and submarines in the U.S. nuclear "triad." This trillion dollar spending spree:
- will do nothing to make us more secure
- will set the pace for an all-new arms race with the other nuclear-armed countries
- will motivate countries that don't have nuclear weapons to get them
Since Congress "holds the purse strings," PSR members across the country are explaining all this to our U.S. Representatives and Senators. Join us to prevent Congress from rubber-stamping the "trillion dollar triad" at a time the nation faces so many other important challenges, including climate change.
9:15 am Briefing at FCNL conference room
10:45 am Meetings begin at Congressional offices
