PSR's Dr. Ira Helfand speaks on the growing danger of nuclear war, the health and humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear weapons, and the new campaign to eliminate nuclear weapons.
Ira Helfand, MD is co-president of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize, and is co-founder and past president of Physicians for Social Responsibility, IPPNW’s US affiliate. He has published articles and has lectured widely on the health effects of nuclear weapons and the long term environmental disaster that would ensue from a range of nuclear wars. He co-authored a report on the effects of a limited nuclear war titled Nuclear Famine: Two Billion People at Risk. He was very active on behalf of the IPPNW in the lobbying of UN member nations regarding the recent UN ban on nuclear weapons.
