PSR-affiliated physicians joined with distinguished colleagues from several nations to urge the World Bank to reconsider financing a lignite coal-fired power plant proposed to be built in Kosovo.

The same underlying “man-made” problems that contribute significantly to the Fukushima reactor disaster in Japan are in place in the United States and require preventative actions that go far beyond the limited steps taken far by the U.S. industry and its regulators, according to five groups commenting today on the English-language version of the official report of the Japanese Parliament’s Fukushima Nuclear Accident Independent Investigation Commission.

"American regulators and the federal government should take heed," said Physicians for Social Responsibility Executive Director Catherine Thomasson. "This report should serve as a warning that the U.S. has the same colluding system between industry, regulators and government."

Maureen McCue, the coordinator for Iowa Physicians for Social Responsibility, said "improving sustainable infrastructure not only makes for a healthier economy, it betters the well-being of Iowans themselves."The Iowa Renewable Energy Jobs 2020 unveiled a new plan Tuesday to fight just that — pushing to create 20,000 jobs and save consumers $1 billion statewide each year in energy costs by the year 2020 through development of renewable energy in Iowa.

Oregon PSR is working to prevent the state of Oregon from promoting or facilitating any coal export infrastructure or related transportation in our state.

The U.S. Senate recently confirmed Dr. Allison MacFarlane to head the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the remainder of outgoing Chairman Gregory Jaczko’s term.

I am a 56 year old family doctor riding a bicycle across the country to talk with people about the health effects of climate change and why we must quickly replace fossil fuel with clean renewable energy to prevent a public health catastrophe.

Three PSR Arizona members have served on the City of Tucson's Climate Change Advisory Committee over the past three years, representing Physicians for Social Responsibility as well as their academic and administrative roles.

On Sunday, June 17th, Dr. Mohammad Khalid hosted a reception for local activists. PSR's Director of Security Programs David Hart and Executive Director Dr. Catherine Thomasson asked for attendees to support PSR and help to form a local DC Metro Area chapter.

“Coal pollutants contribute to four of the five leading causes of mortality in the United States: heart disease, cancer, stroke, and chronic respiratory diseases,” said Catherine Thomasson, MD, executive director of PSR. “The damage they do to health is severe and widespread. It’s vital that these dirty emissions be reduced. If not, thousands of Americans will needlessly suffer illnesses and premature deaths.”

Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) today announced its endorsement of Dr. Allison Macfarlane as chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
