We Do Not Need a New Bomb Plant
A study requested by the Congress shows that new warhead production is unnecessary, renewing calls for the elimination of reliable replacement warheads and the Bush plan to create "Bombplex 2030." The report, commissioned by the Department of Energy (DOE), shows that plutonium warheads have significantly longer effective lifetimes than previously believed, in many cases remaining viable until the end of this century.
The Bush administration was advocating for a significant overhaul of all warheads with a new plutonium production capacity to be built at DOE national labs around the country. The Bush proposal was based on the assumption that existing warheads already were growing "old" and unreliable.
This report shows that the DOE can save billions of dollars by not moving forward with RRW and pit production. PSR encourages that a large part of the budgetary savings be reinvested in renewable energy research, development and implementation. This shift in priorities at the DOE labs would signal a commitment to non-proliferation and a responsible approach to addressing energy needs and global warming.
