Statement on Confirmation of Scott Pruitt to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

February 17, 2017

Statement by Jeff Carter
Executive Director, Physicians for Social Responsibility

"The Senate vote to confirm Scott Pruitt as the as head of the Environmental Protection Agency is a profoundly misguided decision that throws into question our government's commitment to clean air, clear water, and, most importantly, to our children's health.

"Mr. Pruitt has a long history of opposing the EPA, working against environmental regulation, and advancing the interests of the fossil fuel industry. He has cast doubt on the reality of climate change. He brought over a dozen lawsuits against EPA environmental protections, backing polluters against the agency he will now lead. Having received hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from oil and gas companies, he used his public office as Oklahoma's attorney general to essentially work as an advocate for those industries' positions.

"Make no mistake, by confirming Pruitt, the Senate has put the health of current and future generations at risk. We need a livable climate. We deserve an EPA headed by a public servant who will defend and enforce the safeguards that protect American families from dirty drinking water and polluted air. The Senate has instead selected a man who appears simply to be a servant of the oil and gas industry. This is a terribly wrong choice for our nation."
