Another big press day for Global Security Institute (GSI) who held a celebrity-studded NGO event May 7 chaired by GSI President Jonathan Granoff in the main conference room. The event featured celebrity Michael Douglas, High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Sergio Duarte, former Under-Secretary-General and Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs President Jayantha Dhanapala and former Under-Secretary-General Nobuyasu Abe.
Sergio Duarte spoke at length on how general and complete disarmament should be accomplished under effective international control, and said that civil society should not be ignored, since there lies some of the best ideas on how to reach a world free of nuclear weapons.
Nobuyasu Abe said that nuclear disarmament could be reached in our lifetime if realistic measures towards disarmament are taken. He stressed that nuclear weapons must be devalued in the international community. The realistic measures he mentioned included nuclear weapon states implementing their disarmament plans and implementation of the CTBT.
