Drinking Water Fact Sheet: Diarrheal Illness

A wide variety of waterborne viruses, bacteria, and parasites can cause acute diarrhea. These include Cryptosporidia, Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter jejuni, rotavirus, E. coli
O157:H7 and other pathogenic E. coli species, Giardia, and the caliciviruses (i.e., Norwalk and Norwalk-like viruses).
