Letter to Obama on the Clean Water Rule

May 28, 2015

President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Obama:

On behalf of our millions of members and supporters, we are writing to thank you for taking the most significant step for clean water in more than a decade – finalizing the Clean Water Rule. This important rule will restore Clean Water Act protections to the critical streams, wetlands, and other waters, including streams that contribute to the drinking water of one in three Americans.

From the Great Lakes to the Colorado River, from Puget Sound to the Chesapeake Bay, people across the nation are grateful for this effort to protect the waterways our children and grandchildren use to drink, swim, and play in.

In finalizing the Clean Water Rule, your Administration has based its work on strong science, drawing upon more than 1,200 peer-reviewed publications and the input of the EPA’s Science Advisory Board. Along the way, diverse stakeholders, including farmers, local elected officials, small business owners, faith groups, public health organizations, sportsmen, and so many others, have voiced their support of strong steps to protect our small streams and wetlands. After countless meetings, consultations, educational outreach, and an extensive comment period, where more than 800,000 Americans submitted comments in support of the rule, we are thrilled to see you move forward with clear protections for these crucial waterways.

Thank you again for this significant step towards protecting America’s waterways, from our iconic lakes and rivers to our local small streams and wetlands. With this important rule, you have again demonstrated leadership on the important environmental challenges of our day, including safeguarding our natural landscapes, protecting our air and water, and combatting climate change. We look forward to continuing to work with you to take more steps to protect our planet for generations to come.
