A Resolution for a healthier, safer future

January 6, 2010

A new year is upon us and we at Physicians for Social Responsibility are excited about the challenges and opportunities ahead.  With your help, we will make great progress on the most critical issues of the day.

Please take a few minutes today to send out the message below to people in your networks urging them to join PSR in our work to eliminate nuclear weapons, to reverse global warming and the toxic degradation of the environment, and to promote safe energy.

Consider the potential for real change if each PSR activist recruited one new member every month of 2010. You can be our most effective ambassador just by saying to your friends and acquaintances: “I’m a PSR member -- you should be too.”

If you want printed material to recruit members in person, please contact: psrnatl@psr.org.

I’m a member of PSR -- you should be too.

Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) is the largest physician-led organization working to prevent nuclear war and proliferation and to slow, stop and reverse global warming, toxic degradation of the environment, and promotion of safe energy. PSR's 50,000 medical and health professionals, concerned citizen members and e-activists, 31 chapters, and 60 Student chapters at medical and public health schools, comprise a unique nationwide network of effective advocates.

Founded in 1961, PSR led the campaign to end atmospheric nuclear weapons testing by documenting the presence of Strontium 90, a byproduct of atomic testing, in children's teeth. During the following two decades, PSR's work to educate the public about the dangers of nuclear war grew into an international movement with the founding of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. In 1985, PSR shared the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to IPPNW for building public pressure to end the nuclear arms race. As we enter a new decade, PSR is at the forefront of efforts to confront the greatest threats to human survival: nuclear weapons and global warming.  And I believe the next couple of years offer an unprecedented opportunity for progress.

By becoming a PSR e-activist, as I am, you can help create positive and needed change on the most critical issues of the day. As an e-activist, you will receive a periodic e-mail on PSR’s important work and how to get your voice heard!

  • Coal's Assault on Human Health

Physicians for Social Responsibility has released a groundbreaking medical report, “Coal’s Assault on Human Health,” which takes a new look at the devastating impacts of coal on the human body. Coal combustion releases mercury, particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and dozens of other substances known to be hazardous to human health. This report looks at the cumulative harm inflicted by those pollutants on three major body organ systems: the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, and the nervous system. The report also considers coal’s contribution to global warming, and the health implications of global warming. Read more »

Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) in partnership with American Nurses Association (ANA) and Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) have released the “Hazardous Chemicals In Health Care” report, detailing the first investigation ever of chemicals found in the bodies of health care professionals. The inquiry found that all of the 20 participants had toxic chemicals associated with health care in their bodies. Each participant had at least 24 individual chemicals present, four of which are on the recently released Environmental Protection Agency list of priority chemicals for regulation. These chemicals are all associated with chronic illness and physical disorders. Read more »
