Tell Congress you won’t support phony chemicals policy reform -- only real, health-protective reform.

Gut EPA's Superfund powers? No way.

January 8, 2014

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is one of our strongest defenders against toxics in the environment. Yet its power to protect U.S. communities from toxics is under attack in Congress. Help us defend our defender now.

The House of Representatives will vote, possibly Thursday, on H.R. 2279, a bill that would eviscerate the laws that require companies to clean up the toxics they often leave in our air, water and on our land. The bill would:

  • delay cleanup at hazardous waste sites;
  • prevent EPA from establishing requirements to speed cleanup and make toxic industries safer; and
  • gut the nation's Superfund law, which has allowed the EPA and other agencies to identify and clean up thousands of polluted hazardous waste sites across the country.

Totally unacceptable.

About one-quarter of Americans live within three miles of a hazardous waste site. Companies that contaminate our communities should be required to clean up their toxic mess. We taxpayers don't want to shoulder the burden of removal and the neighbors shouldn't have to suffer the hazards left in their back yards.

Tell your Representative to vote no on H.R. 2279.
