Help protect your community from dangerous chemical releases

March 18, 2010

There are over 5,800 "high risk" chemical plants in the United States according to the Department of Homeland Security. An accident or attack at just 300 of them would put the health of 110 million Americans at risk. These plants use and store chemicals such as chlorine gas, hydrofluoric acid, and anhydrous sulfur dioxide – chemicals that are acutely toxic.

There are safer alternatives, but stronger legislation is needed to get plants to adopt safer chemical technologies. Congress has the opportunity to change this, but chemical industry lobbyists are working hard to put profits above our safety and security.

Last November, the House of Representatives passed comprehensive chemical security legislation. Now, it's the Senate's turn.

We need you to tell your senators to get tough on chemical security.

Right now, senators are meeting to discuss comprehensive chemical security legislation. We need to make sure that the bill that comes out of the Senate does as much to protect the health of Americans as the version that passed the House.
