For climate and health: Oppose Trump's Anti-Climate Executive Order
March 28, 2017
Today, in the latest attack on our climate protections, President Trump signed an executive order that will dismantle the Clean Power Plan. The executive order will also scrap other limits on carbon pollution and greenhouse gases set in place under the Obama Administration.
The Clean Power Plan is one of the most significant climate policies the United States has ever developed. PSR members contributed to efforts to send recommendations to the Environmental Protection Agency that helped chart policies to reduce carbon emissions from power plants by 32 percent below 2005 levels by 2030.
Carbon pollution from power plants is our nation’s biggest climate change accelerator. Undoing the Clean Power Plan threatens the health of all communities by unleashing the health risks of uncurbed climate change. Trump’s executive order increases the risk of severe heat waves, extreme storms, waterborne and vector-borne diseases, asthma-triggering air pollution, and more.
In addition, Trump's executive order attacks the rules that set carbon emission limits for new power plants and instructions to federal agencies to reconsider the "social cost of carbon." Without this measure, the EPA can no longer take into account the enormous costs that carbon pollution imposes on our society. Trump is also seeking to rewrite rules protecting us from dangerous methane pollution from shale gas drilling.
These are just a few examples of what Trump's anti-health executive order seeks to do.
To reduce carbon pollution and protect the health of our future generations, we must act NOW. This executive order is a major step backward—and it seriously endangers our health.
Tell your representative you oppose Trump's anti-climate executive order—and they should too.
