As early as tonight, the House of Representatives will vote on H.R. 2218, the dangerous "Coal Residuals Reuse and Management Act of 2013."
Coal ash is the toxic waste material left after power plants burn coal. Unsafe disposal of toxic coal ash allows heavy metals like mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium and selenium leach into water sources and blow in the wind, threatening hundreds of communities nationwide.
We need federally enforceable standards that will safeguard public health and the environment. Yet H.R. 2218 would do the opposite: It would block EPA from setting minimum standards for safe storage.
