Tell Congress: Protect our Health -- Oppose extreme anti-health bills
January 4, 2017
The attacks on public health and safety protections have begun.
The House of Representatives this week is introducing two bills that would jeopardize federal rules that protect our air, water and overall safety.
- The "REINS Act" would require that any new major federal agency rule be jointly approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives before it could be enacted into law. If a joint resolution of approval were not issued within 70 days, the rule would not take effect.
- The Midnight Rule Relief Act of 2017 would allow Congress to arbitrarily reject, for any reason, any regulations finalized near the end of a presidential term.
These bills could delay or block clean air and clean water safeguards—like the recently passed rule to curb climate-damaging methane pollution from the oil and natural gas industry.
And they are unnecessary. Because regulatory agencies can only take actions that have been designated by Congress in authorizing legislation, Congress already has the final say when it comes to agency rulemaking.
Congress should ensure that federal agencies enforce laws designed to protect our water, air quality and public health—not curb the power of these agencies to carry out their mission.
All of us suffer when health-protective rules are weakened, delayed or blocked. And children, low-income communities, communities of color, and people with chronic disease suffer most.
Don't stand for it. Tell your representative you oppose the REINS Act and the Midnight Rule Relief Act of 2017—and they should too.
With a new Congress and a new Administration coming into office, these bills are just the first of the attacks to come on clean air, clean water, climate and health. We anticipate many more. PSR will be standing strong to fight back and defend health. Thank you for standing with us.
