No subsidies for the dangerous and polluting nuclear industry

April 25, 2011

On April 26, 2011, PSR marked the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident with a press conference on the ongoing heath impact from Chernobyl, the continuing nuclear crisis at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan, and the lessons from both for U.S. public health and safety.

PSR also released a new interactive Evacuation Zone Map, which shows a person’s residence in relation to a nuclear reactor and its evacuation zone.  One third of the population of the United States (over 111 million people) lives within 50 miles of a nuclear reactor.

Despite the continuing health impacts of the Chernobyl disaster and the ongoing Fukushima crisis, President Obama continues to push Congress to authorize more loan guarantees to construct new reactors, as well as for including nuclear in a national "clean energy standard."  The dangerous and polluting nuclear industry should not get these lavish taxpayer subsidies.

Write President Obama and your elected representatives in Washington.  Tell them you oppose subsidies for new nuclear reactors and a "clean energy standard" that includes nuclear.
