Best opportunity in years to reduce military spending!
April 3, 2012
The battle over our federal budget priorities has begun. We urge you to remember that it is your money and to make your voice heard this tax season.

The current discussion in Congress offers us the best opportunity in years to make meaningful reductions in the bloated military budget. We can't afford to squander this moment, but some are trying to do just that. Congressman Paul Ryan (R - WI), chair of the House Budget Committee, has put out a budget calling for draconian cuts to programs that affect the most vulnerable in our society while amazingly military spending would be increased from its already astronomical levels.
We need your help building support for an alternative that promotes peace, justice and protects the environment. The Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) "Budget for All" is a realistic budget that provides a strong vision for the future of our nation. We are proud that the CPC incorporated the entire Smarter Approach to Nuclear Expenditures (SANE) Act in their budget this year. PSR has been working with Rep. Ed. Markey on this vital legislation which would save $100 billion over the next decade by making prudent cuts to U.S. nuclear weapons spending, bolstering both our economic and national security.
Since this issue impacts the entire world we are joining with a vibrant international coalition for the Global Day of Action on Military Spending. Watch their captivating short video and find or create an event in your community. Click here for a list of PSR action ideas.
Next week just before tax day, we will be asking you to take action. Today, we ask that you spread the word about our work. Please send this alert to 5-10 friends and ask them to join you in speaking up for peace.
We were inspired last week when we opened our mail and found a generous contribution from a member along with a list of 73 friends that she asked us to contact about our vital work. Not all of us will suggest that many names, but we hope you will share your enthusiasm for PSR with others. Tell them, "I'm a PSR member and you should be too because PSR fights to make our voice heard in pressing national debates."
Nuclear Famine: A Billion People at Risk
The newly generated data on the decline in agricultural production that would follow a limited, regional nuclear war in South Asia support the concern that more than one billion people would be in danger of starvation. Epidemic disease and further conflict spawned by such a famine would put additional hundreds of millions at risk. Read more »
