Let's keep the president's finger off the nuclear button

January 26, 2017

Did you know that current United States policy gives the president complete authority to launch a nuclear strike at any moment? In 1974, President Richard Nixon famously said, "I can go back into my office and pick up the telephone and in 25 minutes 70 million people will be dead." Six days after President Donald Trump took over the nation's nuclear launch codes, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced that the iconic "Doomsday Clock" was moving a half-minute closer to midnight.

One person should not have the power to launch a nuclear war. Fortunately, there is something you can do about it. On January 24, Congressman Ted Lieu (CA) and Senator Edward Markey (MA) introduced the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act which would prohibit the President from launching a nuclear first strike without a declaration of war by Congress.

Once nuclear missiles are launched, they cannot be recalled. Please ask your U.S. Senators to cosponsor this important bill.
