Time for Diplomacy with Iran

January 5, 2012

Tensions with Iran are escalating. Iran recently threatened to close the straits of Hormuz and the Pentagon dismissed Iran's warning that the Carrier, the USS John C. Stennis, must stay out of the region. Both countries have stepped up their show of military strength in the Gulf leading to an increased risk of a miscalculation that may lead to war. We urge the President to pursue the type of direct diplomatic engagement with Iran he talked about when he campaigned in 2008.

Iran's nuclear program remains opaque and potentially dangerous. The United States must work to find an agreement with Iran that allows for international safeguards and controls. As hardliners in Iran attempt to use the West as leverage for a more adversarial foreign policy, President Barack Obama must avoid giving them the type of excuse they need to develop a nuclear weapon.

We need you to write to President Obama now and tell him that you do not accept military action and believe it is time for direct diplomatic engagement with Iran. As some in the United States beat the drums to war, we must offer a path to peace.
