EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt has proposed a rule that would ban the EPA from utilizing scientific studies unless all data in those studies can be released to the public. Why is that a problem? Some of the best science draws on hospital databases, and the rule would require the release of patients’ names, diagnoses, and the like. This would be a total violation of privacy and confidentiality.

That means we lose the right to learn from the very studies that allow scientists to draw significant conclusions about environmental threats to health.

Can you take an extra step to help block this awful rule? Join PSR in speaking out at the EPA’s hearing on this topic, July 17 in Washington, DC. Please register here. We need as many people as possible to speak out in favor of basing health policy on sound science. It’s not hard—you will speak in your own personal voice, whether as a health professional, a scientist, or a concerned citizen.

In Oregon, frontline communities have endorsed an intersectional climate justice platform: we oppose construction of fossil fuel infrastructure, we oppose hateful policies like Measure 105, and we support frontline leaders developing solutions that change the rules and draw down wealth and power, like the Portland Clean Energy Fund. Across the country, and around the world, our communities will Rise for Climate, Jobs, and Justice and we will Rise for Climate Action aimed at communicating to global and local leaders that a strong US climate movement exists and that the time has come to hold our leaders accountable.

This facility would be the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in Washington, threaten air and water quality, and pollute to the equivalent of 1.2 million cars.

A new Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) on the project misses many likely impacts and the true costs of this project. While the company argues that this facility would be a net-benefit for the climate, independent researchers find that it could be the largest source of carbon pollution in Washington by 2025.

In response, Jamail embarks on a journey to the geographical front lines of this crisis—from Alaska to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, via the Amazon rainforest—in order to discover the consequences to nature and to humans of the loss of ice.

In The End of Ice: Bearing Witness and Finding Meaning in the Path of Climate Disruption , we follow Jamail as he scales Denali, the highest peak in North America, dives in the warm crystal waters of the Pacific only to find ghostly coral reefs, and explores the tundra of St. Paul Island where he meets the last subsistence seal hunters of the Bering Sea and witnesses its melting glaciers. Accompanied by climate scientists and people whose families have fished, farmed, and lived in the areas he visits for centuries, Jamail begins to accept the fact that Earth, most likely, is in a hospice situation. Ironically, this allows him to renew his passion for the planet’s wild places, cherishing Earth in a way he has never been able to before.

Like no other book, The End of Ice offers a firsthand chronicle—including photographs throughout of Jamail on his journey across the world—of the catastrophic reality of our situation and the incalculable necessity of relishing this vulnerable, fragile planet while we still can

Dahr Jamail, a Truthout staff reporter, is the author of Beyond the Green Zone: Dispatches from an Unembedded Journalist in Occupied Iraq. Jamail has reported from the Middle East over the last ten years, and he has won the Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism.

The LA City Council will vote to establish a Climate Emergency Mobilization Office and Commission to decarbonize, detoxify, and democratize our local and regional economies. This includes:

The formal declaration of a climate emergency in the City of Los Angeles;

Creating a Climate Emergency Mobilization Office inside City Hall;

Establishing a Climate Emergency Commission with strong indigenous and front-line community representation;

A plan to hold Community Assemblies in front-line communities across our city to shape the City’s Climate Emergency Mobilization Plan;

$1 million allocated in the 2019-2020 budget for the Office’s programs as well as additional community-based climate solutions identified in the assemblies.

We invite you to express support for and celebrate this breakthrough with all our supporters—this simply would not have been possible without the organizing work of residents and activists like you across the City. Moving forward, we need your ongoing support to ensure all these initiatives have the impact we need!
</text>
<dtstart><parameters><tzid><text>America/New_York</text></tzid></parameters><date-time>2019-07-03T09:30:00</date-time></dtstart><categories><parameters>
<text>en-US</text>
</parameters><text>California</text></categories><contact/><location><text>Los Angeles City Hall @ 200 N Spring St, Los Angeles, CA 90012</text></location><sequence><integer>0</integer></sequence>
<x-cost-type><unknown>free</unknown></x-cost-type><x-tags><parameters>
<text>en-US</text>
</parameters><unknown>climate change,environment & health</unknown></x-tags><x-instant-event><unknown>1</unknown></x-instant-event></properties></vevent><vevent><properties><uid><text>ai1ec-4473@www.psr.org</text></uid><dtstamp><date-time>2021-07-03T20:24:37Z</date-time></dtstamp>
<text>Webinar: Climate, Health, & Equity Town Hall</text>

<text>

Click to enlarge

In addition to global solidarity, we will be focusing locally, demanding that our elected representatives declare climate change a health emergency that needs swift, decisive and thorough policy action to reduce emissions. We will also demand that leaders implement the policies detailed in the U.S. Call to Action: On Climate, Health, and Equity.
We are joining with the Sunrise Movement, Youth vs. Apocalypse, together with medical and other health professional students from around the Bay Area.

Where: BlackRock Headquarters, 400 Howard Street, San Francisco.

When: We will gather at 9:30 am as Bay Area medical students, doctors, nurses and other health professionals distribute medical excuse notes at an “Urgent Climate Care Clinic” and share information about the health impacts of climate change.

Please join us at this clinic and wear your white coats if possible – look for the SF Bay Area PSR banner!

Then, at 10 am, we will share in the rally and speeches. At 12:30 pm, we will march to the offices of legislative leaders to demand greater action on climate justice.

BlackRock manages over $6 trillion in investments and has stated that pro-climate investments are among its top 5 priorities, although in reality, the firm invests heavily in anti-planet, anti-justice industries. It is the largest investor in the world in coal exploration and infrastructure, the largest contributor to the deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest, and one of the largest investors in oil and gas production. BlackRock has been accused repeatedly of “greenwashing” by speaking in broad terms of building a better world and making token gestures, while putting their vast resources at the disposal of those very industries which are actively destroying the planet. In addition, BlackRock is a huge investor in the private prison industry which is currently allying with the Trump Administration to cage children and other migrants at our southern border, and to incarcerate people of color at hugely disproportionate rates.

We join our allies in demanding that BlackRock divest from all industries that perpetuate and accelerate our climate crisis, that they push themselves and their clients to transition to a Green New Deal economy that builds a sustainable solution for our planetary crisis. We call on Blackrock to take a leading role in pushing the entire financial and industrial sectors to comply with international climate agreements like the Paris Accord. We also demand that BlackRock divest entirely from the private prison industry.
</text>
<dtstart><parameters><tzid><text>America/New_York</text></tzid></parameters><date-time>2019-12-06T09:30:00</date-time></dtstart><categories><parameters>
<text>en-US</text>
</parameters><text>California</text></categories><contact><text>action@sfbaypsr.org</text></contact><location><text>San Francisco, CA - BlackRock Headquarters @ 400 Howard Street, San Francisco, CA</text></location><sequence><integer>0</integer></sequence>
<x-cost-type><unknown>free</unknown></x-cost-type><x-tags><parameters>
<text>en-US</text>
</parameters><unknown>climate change,environment & health</unknown></x-tags><x-instant-event><unknown>1</unknown></x-instant-event></properties></vevent><vevent><properties><uid><text>ai1ec-5444@www.psr.org</text></uid><dtstamp><date-time>2021-07-03T20:24:37Z</date-time></dtstamp>
<text>Health in a Changing Climate: A Symposium for Health Professionals</text>

<text>
Join Washington PSR for a climate and health symposium at Virginia Mason on December 7th. Yet most of us don’t know that when we do, we may be harming our own health.

A new report, “Health Effects from Gas Stove Pollution,” presents the scientific evidence documenting dangerous levels of indoor air pollution from using a gas stove; measures we can take to reduce the risks to health; and research and policy actions needed to address this problem at its root.

Join representatives of Physicians for Social Responsibility, Rocky Mountain Institute, Sierra Club and Mothers Out Front to hear the most important findings of this report.

Our state’s public health response must include investments in climate resiliency, sustainability, and the long-term economic security of those hardest hit by the COVID-19 crisis. The voices of health professionals are needed to ensure that any state policy response protects public health and upholds the principles of climate and economic justice.

Come learn how health professionals can advocate for a just recovery by elevating the Climate Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy’s new “Resilient Future Platform!” We will outline how the principles of this platform are critical to upholding public health in the face of a statewide recovery, and provide resources and guidance on how you can contribute to this campaign going forward.

Climate change adds stressors such as wildfires, super storms, and heat waves that further test our capacity. It is critical that we build resilient health care systems, able to respond effectively in times of crisis. Through interdisciplinary sessions with health care workers, sustainability officers, and advocates for sustainable solutions, we will build a community of invested individuals and organizations to create resilient and equitable health care systems.

You can’t have climate change without sacrifice zones, and you can’t have sacrifice zones without disposable people, and you can’t have disposable people without racism. – Hop Hopkins, The Sierra Club

Too often climate change, systemic racism, and health inequities are seen as siloed and disconnected from one another. This webinar will examine how these important issues and concerns intersect and compound each other—often with devastating consequences for communities of color. We look forward to learning from Hop Hopkins’ experience, expertise, and call for a more holistic and integrative approach to addressing the host of challenges facing Black and Brown people. Our hope is that after viewing this webinar, participants will leave with a renewed sense of urgency and more determination to be strong advocates and allies for hard-hit and marginalized communities.
