The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is again abandoning its role of protecting our health, opting instead to favor the oil and gas industry.
President Trump and EPA Acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler have announced their plan to roll back an effective, common-sense rule that limits leaks and emissions of methane from natural gas wells. Methane is a powerful heat-trapping gas, so the proposed change would accelerate climate change, increasing multiple threats to health.
The rule, known as the New Source Performance Standards, limits leaking, venting, and flaring of methane from newly built or modified gas wells. It also limits dangerous gases known as volatile organic compounds that accompany methane coming out of the wells. These gases include benzene, a known human carcinogen, and toluene and xylenes, which can harm the nervous system.
Why is the EPA rolling back a health-protective, climate-protective rule?
The EPA is putting industry profits ahead of our health and well-being.
Tell your members of Congress that the EPA’s proposed action is irresponsible and dangerous to health. Urge them to speak out against this dangerous roll-back.
