As a Student, Here’s Why I believe Voting in this 2020 Presidential Election is Critical

by Stephanie Talarek

I’m Steph Talarek, a graduate student at George Mason University’s Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution, and a PSR intern in their Nuclear Weapons Abolition Program.

Two of the biggest issues that face our planet, and that all of us in PSR are passionate about, are nuclear disarmament and climate change. How our national leadership confronts these twin threats is going to be heavily impacted by the 2020 presidential election. These two issues pose existential threats to the planet that our generation will inherit. What’s at risk is the possibility that we may be led into a nuclear arms race we have not experienced in decades and climate change will continue to be ignored, allowing our planet to be battered to what may be a point beyond repair.

This 2020 presidential election, more than ever, it is imperative that we, the youth, get out and vote. We have the chance to make a pivotal impact and help to bring about the positive changes to our society that we seek. This will impact not only the U.S., but the whole world.

More than 65 million youth voters are eligible to vote this year, giving our generation the power to transform American politics and foreign policy. Let’s do it! How cool would it be if we chose the next president of the United States?

So, do your part. Join me! Make your voice heard. Get out and vote!
