The new documentary In the Dark of the Valley is the first feature film to focus on the Santa Susana Field Laboratory, a former nuclear and rocket-engine testing site near Los Angeles. The film is an in-depth exploration into the site’s long history of cover-ups and negligence by site owners Boeing, NASA, and the Department of Energy. It also tells the harrowing story of how a community of mothers, led by Melissa Bumstead, have dealt with the struggles of childhood cancer and their new found life of environmental advocacy.

After industry and transportation, buildings are a top emitter of green-house gases. Electrification of buildings is a critical step toward decarbonization, improved health, and health equity. Natural gas appliances and heaters are proven to increase indoor air pollution and exacerbate conditions such as asthma. The health harms from indoor pollution are compounded by the high outdoor air pollution levels in California, per the American Lung Association’s State of the Air 2020 report. Also, while 98% of Californians live in counties with a failing grade for at least one air pollution measurement, a person of color is three times more likely to live in a county with failing grades in all measurements.
California is at a critical turning point with several ground-breaking transportation and building decarbonization bills moving through the legislature that we are amplifying and supporting with our health professional voice. In addition, we need to continue our coalition efforts toward pushing the California Energy Commission (CEC) to demonstrate climate health leadership by developing a 2022 building energy code cycle to require all-electric new construction statewide.
Join Oregon PSR on April 29th for the Greenfield Peace Scholarship 2021 Awards Ceremony
We received so many thoughtful and amazing submissions for our annual Greenfield Peace Scholarship! The theme of this year’s scholarship is Art & Creation: Self Expression, Activism, and Social Change, and we asked young Oregonians who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) to respond by creating a work of visual art. Our incredible group of judges met by Zoom recently and determined the top prize winners, and we’ll be highlighting the finalists over the next month on our website and social media platforms.
The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention prize winners will be revealed at the Greenfield Peace Scholarship 2021 Awards Ceremony, which will premiere on the Oregon PSR YouTube channel on Thursday, April 29th at 6:30 PM PDT. We are looking forward to celebrating these wonderful applicants and their artwork, and we hope that you will plan to tune in to watch the ceremony as it premieres on our YouTube channel!
Hear ten student finalists present essays based on this quote by Ms. Beatrice Fihn: “The story of nuclear weapons will have an ending, and it is up to us what the ending will be. Will it be the end of nuclear weapons or will it be the end of us?” $15,000 in scholarships will be awarded. Judges will be Bob Dodge, MD, Bob Gould, MD, and Ms. Sarah Pattison.
Greater Boston PSR’s monthly meeting – open to all.

APHA and ecoAmerica are partnering to offer the Climate for Health Ambassadors Training Program. Join us for a free, interactive 4-hour training that will cover the links between climate and health, the spectrum of solutions, speaking effectively on the topic, and opportunities to act and advocate.
Upon completion of the full training and signing the Climate for Health Ambassadors Agreement (optional), public health professionals (and students!) will be given Climate for Health Ambassador designation. These leaders will be invited to be listed publicly as trained leaders who are available to present on climate and health.
